Maliau Basin conversation Area is one of Malaysia’s finest remaining wilderness areas. Bounded by formidable escarpment reaching over 1,675 metres above sea level, the almost circular Basin encompasses 390 km of pristine forest, a virtually self-contained ecosystem, never permanently inhabited and with large areas still remaining to be explored and document. Remarkably, the whole Basin is a single huge water catchment, drained by one river only, the Maliau river, which flows out through a gorge in the southeast of the Basin, joining the kuamut River, and eventually the kinabatangan River, Sabah’s longest and most important waterway.
First i like to explain, that this is not a normal tourist attraction. It is more like an expedition. On top of that, the price is high. This is done by purpose, to not get all tourists, but only those who really like to do hardcore trekkings for now, and in the future.
The mystical Maliau Basin is one of Malaysia’s finest remaining wilderness areas.
Maliau Basin is best done, in a 5D/4N Full Loop package. The first and last days, are basically travel days from and to Kota Kinabalu.
Day 1:
It is approximately a 5 hours drive, and then you reach the base camp where you do a canopy walk, briefing, and night drive. Next day it all starts.
Day 2:
By car drive to the Agathis Camp, and from there it is a 6 hours walk to the Nephentus Camp (also called Camel Trophy Camp). On arrival relax, but then.. take the 2 hours walk to the Akob-akob and Giluk Falls. This is a very steep down hill walk, but.. one of the most beautiful falls i ever encountered.
Day 3:
Long walk, from Nephentus to Lobah Camp, and then downhill to the Maliau Falls. Wow. Then.. uphill back to Lobah Camp, and onward to Ginseng Camp. You are quite happy once you reach Ginseng, because… you managed to reach the Maliau Falls, which was my main objective.
Day 4:
Walk from Ginseng (after seeing Ginseng Falls) to Agathis Camp, and overnight for the last night in the jungle.
Day 5:
After breakfast, pack up, and transfer back to Kota Kinabalu.
Again, this is hardcore trekking, with 10 leeches on your left shoe, and 10 leeches on your right shoe. If this is not scarring you away, then.. please contact me, and i will give you a more detailed description.
