Itinerary:
Day 1: 09:45hrs Meet at Hotel Lobby or Sandakan Airport (preferably on MH2042 OR AK6492). Transfer to jetty for Schedule boat depart 10:15-10:30hrs to Selingan Island. The journey to Island take approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. On arrival, register at the Turtle Island Parks HQ and check into chalet.
After lunch at cafeteria, free at own leisure e.g. swimming or snorkeling (limited equipment can be rented, cash only). After dinner, waiting for the rangers call to observe turtle laying eggs. Transfer the eggs to the Hatchery and if there is any young turtle hatch-lings, an opportunity to observe the release of the turtles to the sea. Overnight at chalet with attached bathroom. (lunch, dinner)
Remarks: Before you go for dinner, make sure you bring all important things with you, so that you noy have to go back to your room! Once the Rangers call you, it is straight to the Turtle laying eggs.
Remarks: The Selingan Island chalet is about 500m away from the beach. There is NO PORTER at the island. Therefore, you have to carry your own luggage from the boat to your chalet. We highly advise you to re-pack your clothing for your duration stay in order to have a more comfortable stay at Selingan Island.” We do have luggage room available at our jetty in Sandakan.
Remarks: Limited snorkel sets are available for rent. Please bring cash for rental.
Day 2: It is not allowed to go around the island between 1800hrs and 0600am by yourself, but.. 0601am is allowed. Many times, you can find Turtles going back to the sea. So.. my advice.. wake up early, and.. go around the island at 6:01am. Leave Turtle Island at 0700am and arrive in Sandakan jetty around 0800am. After breakfast, Drive for approximately 30 minutes to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center. Proceed to the free roaming area feeding platform. 1000 hrs Feeding of Orang Utans. At this center, observe man’s closest relative “the Orang Utan” being rehabilitated to become wild in their natural habitat and experience a walk in the Tropical Lowland Dipterocarp Forest of Borneo.
Visit to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, the centre that managed to improve the living condition of the rescued sun bear and released their natural behaviors in the 2.5ha enclosed forest. 11:45hrs, Depart centre to have lunch at Sepilok area.
12:30hrs depart transfer to jetty in Sandakan. depart jetty take an hour boat cruise up to the Lower Kinabatangan River Sanctuary, This is a wonderful journey of discovery which starts from the waters of Sulu Sea of Sandakan Town through a magnificent scenery of the Mangrove Forest. Check in Abai Jungle Lodge, Late in the afternoon, you’ll be experiencing a cruise to search for wildlife until the sunsets while enjoying a cup of coffee and by night falls continue the night cruise to witness the fire flies as Christmas tree. Return to the lodge for dinner. After dinner, again experience the “Jungle at night” at our nature boardwalk to search for birds, snakes, insects and other wildlife with our nature guide. (lunch, dinner)
Day 3: Wake up by the calls of nature. Early morning take a river trip to Pitas lake to observe wildlife and experience the unique of Pitas lake. After breakfast, you are invited to join our tree planting project with the locals, enjoy a simple lunch arranged by the villagers at Abai village. This project specially design to help the locals. After lunch, cruise UP river to Sukau village in search of primates especially the wild orang utan, birds, pygmy elephant and other wildlife. Arrive Sukau, check in at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. Late afternoon, take another river cruise to Menanggul River, a small tributary of the Kinabatangan. Return lodge for dinner and overnight at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
Day 4: After breakfast, take another boat transfer back to Sandakan. This is the last chance to spot animals. Upon arrival at jetty, proceed to airport for your flight MH2047 (ETD 12:50hrs) or drop of at your hotel in Sandakan. (breakfast, lunch)
Recommended Personal Gear: Insect repellent, Torch Light, raincoat (umbrella not recommended), hat, binocular and sun screen (sweat proof). Use good walking shoes and comfortable cotton T-shirt with long or short pant.
