Itinerary (3 hours)
Pickup 0800am from your hotel and drive about 24 km, to the Semonggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. It is the only one of it’s kind in Sarawak. Set up in 1975, this 740-hectare of virgin forest is home to Orang-Utans, honey bears, hornbills, porcupines, storks, barking deer and monkeys. Most of these animals were rescued from captivity and are being rehabilitated here in their natural surroundings. To get the centre involves a 30 minutes drive by car from the city and a walk which snakes through lush tropical rainforest. The tour provides an opportunity of a lifetime to observe how the Orang-Utans are being rehabilitated and trained to fend for themselves before being released into the wild. Visitors are allowed to study and observe the Orang-Utans at a distance.
Sometimes, no Orang-Utans come to the feeding area. This happens sometimes during fruit season, when the jungle provide them with easy to find food. This is very positive for the Orang-Utans, but less nice for the waiting visitors. Do not let this effect your mood ;).
